Rutgers Outlasts Northwestern 62-48 in Piscataway

PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Caileigh Walsh, Jillian Brown and Sydney Wood combined to score 36 of Northwestern's 48 total points, but the Wildcats fell to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 62-48 on the road Wednesday.
Walsh led the Wildcats (8-18, 1-14) with 14 points and two steals. Brown added 11 points off the bench and Wood chipped in as well with 11 points, four assists and three steals.
The Northwestern defense held Rutgers shooters to just 34.9 percent from the field, including 11.1 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-0, Northwestern went on a 7-0 run with 7:09 left in the first quarter to take a 7-2 lead. The Wildcats then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-10 advantage. Northwestern did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 14 points close to the basket.
Northwestern built that first quarter lead to 17-12 before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 9:09 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Walsh, to increase its lead to 22-12. The Scarlet Knights came most of the way back, but the Wildcats still enjoyed a narrow 30-29 advantage heading into halftime.
The 'Cats and the Scarlet Knights battled neck and neck through the third quarter and entered the fourth frame with the score tied 42-42.
Rutgers broke the tie in the final quarter, taking control in the final to win 62-48. Northwestern took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring all six of its points in the paint.
