Scane Returns to Field, No. 5 Syracuse Edges No. 4 Northwestern

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Northwestern lacrosse team trailed by four at halftime and tied the game in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback and fell 16-15 at No. 5 Syracuse to open the 2023 season.
 
Northwestern All-American Izzy Scane, who missed the entire 2022 season with an injury, scored her first goal in over 600 days with 13:34 left to go in the second quarter off an assist from Erin Coykendall. The graduate student tied for the game-high with five goals and added two assists.
 
The Wildcats (0-1) trailed 8-4 at halftime and was outscored 6-1 to end the opening half after Scane tallied her first goal, however NU outscored the Orange 6-3 in the third quarter. The game was tied three times in the second half, but Northwestern wasn't able to take the lead. First-year Madison Taylor scored with 4:21 to go in the fourth to even the score at 14, but SU's (1-0) Emma Tyrrell scored the winning goal with 2:24 left. Northwestern led twice with its last lead of 3-2 occurring two minutes into the second quarter. 
 
Taylor impressed in her first collegiate game, tying Scane with a game-high five goals while adding two ground balls. She tallied the 'Cats first goal of the campaign just 1:45 into the game.
 
Graduate student Molly Laliberty made her Northwestern debut in goal and totaled six saves while facing 24 shots. Syracuse goalkeeper Delaney Sweitzer made 11 saves on 26 shots.
 
The Wildcats had a 23-11 advantage in draw controls, led by Samantha Smith's nine. Taylor also added seven. NU started the day 0-for-7 in free position shots before converting four in the second half with Taylor (3 goals) and Dylan Amonte (1) finding the back of the net.
 
Megan Carney had a team-high four goals for Syracuse.
 
Northwestern returns home to battle Notre Dame in the home opener at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday, Feb. 16 inside Ryan Fieldhouse.
