STILLWATER, Okla. - For the third season in a row, the 'Cats will have at least one runner in the NCAA Championships after Ava Earl earned automatic qualification with an eighth-place finish at Friday's NCAA Midwest Regional. Earl headlined a slate of seven Northwestern runners who earned a third-place finish at the competition, just one spot out of an automatic team bid.
Earl's 20:42.3 finish was just four seconds removed from her personal best and marked her fastest 6k time since last October at the Bradley Pink Classic. She'll head to her second-straight National Championship after finishing fourth among Wildcats in last year's 6k.
Along with Earl, Kalea Bartolotto and Katherine Hessler also finished in the top 15 in Friday's race, earning All-Region Honors. Bartolotto placed ninth with a time of 20:43.4 while Hessler finished 13th at 20:47.6. The placements gave Earl and Bartolotto their second All-Midwest awards while Hessler took home the award for the first time.
Rounding out the field were Anna Delgado (21:42.8), who ran in her first Regional as a first year, Fiona Lenth (22:07.8), Maddy Whitman (22:13.7) and Adele Magaud (22:22.2). Overall, the 'Cats finished with 155 points and a third-place finish.
Earl will now get set for NCAA Championships, which take place next Saturday, Nov. 18, at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va. The full field of team and individual selections will be announced on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the NCAA Selection Show, which will air on NCAA.com.
