Northwestern improves to 2-0 to start the year for the fourth-consecutive season and the ninth time during Sullivan-Ubben Head Coach Chris Collins' tenure.
Barnizher finished the night with 13 points and 10 rebounds en route to his second-straight double-double. Playing a career-high 38 minutes, the junior captain led all Wildcats with nine points in the second half. Barnhizer is the first Wildcat to record a double-double in back-to-back games since Vic Law did so in 2018-19 against Penn State (Feb. 4) and Iowa (Feb. 10).
With a team-leading four assists, Boo Buie moved into sole possession of third place all-time in career assists for Northwestern, passing Patrick Baldwin (452). Buie added 15 points, marking his seventh straight game scoring in double digits dating back to last season.
Northwestern finished with a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint. In addition, the 'Cats out-rebounded the Flyers, 27-21, led by Barnhizer's 10 boards. NU also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 12 rebounds into 16 second chance points.
The Wildcats' defense was swarming on Friday, forcing 15 Dayton turnovers which they turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Nick Martinelli led the way individually for the 'Cats with career-high four steals.
How It Happened
Trailing 25-24 late in the first half, Northwestern went on an 11-0 run over the last 3:25, knocking down 5-of-5 field goals to close the half while holding Dayton scoreless for the final 4:53 of the half to take a 35-25 lead.
The Wildcats did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 26 of its 35 points close to the basket.
Dayton proceeded to take a 51-50 lead before Northwestern went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Martinelli's layup, to seize a 56-51 lead with 7:42 to go in the contest. The Wildcats held onto that lead for the rest of the game on their way to a 71-66 win. Northwestern made the most of eight offensive rebounds to tack on 14 second chance points out of 36 total in the half.
