10/23/2023 12:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Northwestern graduate guard Boo Buie has been named one of 20 watch-list candidates for the 2024 Bob Cousy Award, which recognizes the top point guard in Division I men's college basketball. Last year, Buie was one of five finalists for the award.
Buie returns to Northwestern after earning All-Big Ten First Team honors and helping secure the Wildcats' second ever bid to the NCAA Tournament during his senior campaign. The Albany, New York, native posted averages of 17.3 points, 4.5 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals during the 2022-23 season, all of which were career highs.
Buie finished the year with 31 double-digit scoring efforts, and his scoring average of 17.3 points ranked sixth in the Big Ten. During Northwestern's five-game winning streak in February which all but assured the team's NCAA Tournament selection, Buie averaged 20.4 points, 4.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game, highlighted by a performance for the ages against No. 1 Purdue. In the Wildcats' upset bid over the top-ranked Boilermakers, he posted 26 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks, becoming the first Big Ten player in over a decade to post 25+ points, 3+ blocks, 3+ steals and 3+ assists in a conference game.
2024 Bob Cousy Award Watch List
His 588 points scored last season is the third-highest single-season mark in school history, while his 154 dimes tied for the fourth-most in program history. Buie's 1,541 career points put him 10th on the program's all-time scoring list, trailing all-time leading scorer John Shurna by 497 points.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, in each of the three rounds starting on Friday, October 27. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2024 Bob Cousy Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just 5. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Cousy and the Hall of Fame's selection committee, where a winner will be selected.
Led by Buie, Northwestern returns four of its top six scorers ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. The 'Cats tip-off the season against Binghamton on at 7 p.m. CT on Monday, Nov. 6 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.
