Defensive Effort Not Enough as Northwestern Loses to Indiana 72-50

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Wildcats kept Indiana to just 13.6 percent from deep in a 3-for-22 shooting performance, but fell 72-50 to the Hoosiers at home Sunday.
The Wildcats (6-9, 0-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Jasmine McWilliams, who had 10 points. Sydney Wood tacked on 10 points and two blocks and Caileigh Walsh added eight points and 11 rebounds.
The Northwestern defense held Indiana shooters to just 36.8 percent from the field, including 13.6 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
Northwestern struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Wildcats continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 40-24 halftime deficit.
Indiana continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 50-32 advantage before Northwestern went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Caroline Lau, to trim its deficit to 50-38 with 2:09 to go in the third. Indiana countered and stretched its lead to 56-42 heading into the fourth. Northwestern knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 18 total points.
Northwestern could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 72-50. Northwestern took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.
