IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Caileigh Walsh totaled 22 points, but the Northwestern women's basketball team fell to the Iowa Hawkeyes 93-64 on the road Wednesday.
Walsh also logged five rebounds to lead the Wildcats (6-10, 0-6). Sydney Wood helped out with nine points and three steals and Kaylah Rainey chipped in with four points and three steals.
Northwestern did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.
The Northwestern defense caused its share of mistakes in Wednesday's game, forcing 14 Iowa turnovers.. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Jillian Brown led the way individually for the Wildcats with three steals.
How It Happened
After playing to a 3-3 tie early in the game, Northwestern went on a 5-0 run with 8:21 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Wood, to take an 8-3 lead. The Wildcats then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 22-16.
The Wildcats continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 47-32 halftime deficit.
Northwestern's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Wildcats faced a 72-47 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
Northwestern could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 93-64. The 'Cats got a boost from their bench in the period, with non-starters scoring eight of their 17 total points.
