EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern volleyball team will take its 6-0 record to the Pacific Northwest for the Husky Invitational hosted by the University of Washington from Thursday, Sept. 8 through Friday, Sept. 9. Stiff competition awaits the Wildcats as two of their three opponents appear in the AVCA Poll. The third weekend of competition begins with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. CT on Thursday, Sept. 8 against Cal Poly and at 9:30 p.m. CT against the No. 13 Huskies. NU wraps up the weekend against No. 24 Pepperdine at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Sept. 9.
'Cat Facts
- Northwestern is on its best start to a season of the Shane Davis era, and the program's best start since the 2012 team won its first 11 matches.
- The Wildcats are taking on their first ranked opponent of 2022 and last defeated a ranked opponent in 2019 when they downed No. 17 Illinois in the season finale, 3-1.
- NU has hit a blistering .332 to start they the year, which leads the Big Ten Conference and ranks second nationally behind Kentucky (.375).
- Desiree Becker ranks second in the Big Ten (minimum 3.0 TA/Set) hitting .479 and Leilani Dodson places fourth hitting .436.
- Kathryn Randorf paces the team and is ninth in the Big Ten, averaging 3.45 kills per set.
- Megan Miller is just eight digs away from reaching 1,000 for her career. She would become the fifth active Big Ten student-athlete to reach the milestone.
Last weekend Northwestern claimed three victories at the Golden Eagle Invitational against host Tennessee Tech (3-1), Evansville (3-1) and Western Carolina (3-0). Lesiak (MVP), Ellee Stinson and Temi Thomas-Ailara were named to the all-tournament team.
The Wildcats are 0-3 when facing Cal Poly, but have not met since 1983. The Mustangs (0-3) opened their season in Utah last week, falling to Utah State (3-1), UCLA (3-0) and Utah Valley (3-1). NU is 0-2 all-time against the Huskies, dropping two 3-0 decisions in 1980 and 2003. The Wildcats fell in Seattle on December 5, 2003, in the NCAA Tournament. After dropping its season-opener at Arkansas (3-0), Washington (3-1) has won three-consecutive matches against Arkansas (3-1), Iowa (3-1) and Illinois (3-1).
Pepperdine has a 2-0 all-time advantage when facing the Wildcats, but have not met since 2002. The Waves (5-1) swept the field at their home tournament, the Pepperdine Asics Invitational, picking up wins against No. 9 Baylor (3-1), UC Santa Barbara (3-1) and San Diego State (3-0).
Northwestern wraps up non-conference play next weekend when it makes the short trip to UIC for the Chicago Cup against DePaul, Loyola Chicago and the host Flames on Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 17.
