NEWTON, Mass. – A scoring avalanche in the first half lifted No. 1 Northwestern past No. 14 Boston College in a 6-0 win Sunday. The win moved the Wildcats to 4-0 on the season to close their season opening road trip through Massachusetts and their second game in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
It marked the first time Northwestern has scored six or more goals in a game since since blanking Indiana 6-0 on Halloween last season and the second straight shutout for the Wildcats behind Annabel Skubisz in goal.
The Wildcats poured in five goals in the first half, striking first in the ninth minute off the stick of Chloe Relford. Relford's rocket shot into the bottom left corner was her first of the season and fourth of her career. Peyton Halsey assisted the goal for her third of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Bente Baekers scored her eighth of the season to extend the Northwestern lead. The fifth-year has now scored in each of the Wildcats' first four games, the first player to do so since Chelsea Armstrong in 2009.
With two seconds remaining in the first quarter Ana Medina Garcia found the back of the net to push the lead to 3-0. It marked her second straight game with a score, the second time in her career that she's scored in back-to-back games.
The quick strikes continued for Chicago's Big Ten Team in the second quarter. Maddie Zimmer scored the Wildcats' fourth goal of the game and Lane Herbert added the fifth in a span of 33 seconds to bring a 5-0 scoreline into halftime.
For Zimmer, the 2021 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, the goal marked her first of the 2022 campaign. Herbert has now recorded two goals and four assists to start the season.
Northwestern managed one more goal in the fourth corner on a shot from Herbert that Halsey angled up into the back of the net for her third goal of the year.
The Wildcats prevailed with six goals, all from different attackers. It's the first time six different players scored for Northwestern in the same game since accomplishing the feat against Kent State last season.
Skubisz continued to climb the record book with her eighth career shutout, moving into sole possession of seventh place in Northwestern history. She finished the game with two saves on five shots faced.
The undefeated Wildcats return home for their next game, a rematch of the national championship against No. 6 Liberty in Evanston on Friday, September 9. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. CT.
