STORYLINES

» Friday's home opener against No. 11 Liberty is a rematch of last year's NCAA championship game, which Northwestern won 2-0 to bring home its first-ever national title. Maddie Zimmer, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, and Alia Marshall scored the title-winning goals, while goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz recorded her third shutout in four NCAA Tournament games, the first title game shutout since 2018. It marks the 35th regular season rematch of the prior season's national championship, a series the reigning champions lead 18-16.

» Annabel Skubisz won her second career Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award this week after posting back-to-back shutouts of No. 18 Duke and No. 14 Boston College in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge last weekend. She holds a perfect 4-0 record in cage and has allowed just two goals through the first four games, the best mark for Northwestern since 1994. Her 0.51 goals against average ranks seventh in the nation and second in the Big Ten.

» Northwestern is off to its first 4-0 start since 2004 and has won eight straight games dating back to Nov. 12, 2021, all against ranked competition. It's tied for their longest winning streak since the Wildcats won 12 games straight in 1990.

» Bente Baekers has scored eight goals and 17 points and leads the nation in goals, goals per game, points and points per game. The fifth-year has scored in every game this season, the first Wildcat to score in the first four games of a season since Chelsea Armstrong in 2009.

MATCHUP INFORMATION

NO. 11 LIBERTY (Friday, Sept. 9, 4 p.m. CT)

» Friday's matchup will be Northwestern's third all-time with Liberty with both previous matchups coming last season. Northwestern leads the series 2-0 and has outscored the Flames 6-3 all-time. Alia Marshall has scored in both matchups with Liberty.

NO. 9 VIRGINIA (Sunday, Sept. 11, 11 a.m. CT)

» Sunday's matchup will be Northwestern's 12th all-time all-time against Virginia and the first since 2013. The Wildcats are 2-1 against Virginia in Evanston, winning their last meeting there 5-3 on September 18, 2011. The No. 9 Cavaliers are Northwestern's first top-10 foe of the season.
