Baekers Scores 75th Goal in 5-0 Win Over Richmond

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 1 Northwestern beat Richmond 5-0 Sunday in Evanston as fifth-year forward Bente Baekers scored her milestone 75th career goal. The win moved Northwestern to 9-1 on the season and 9-0 in non-conference play.
Baekers' historic strike came in the 20th minute and made her just the second player in Northwestern history to reach 75 goals. The three-time All-American added another in the 56th minute to bring her nation-leading total to 15 goals this season. She also paces the country in goals per game, points and points per game.
Sunday's game marked Baekers' fifth multi-goal game of the season and the 20th of her career.
Lauren Wadas opened the scoring in the 13th minute, slipping behind the Richmond defense to finish off Lane Herbert's shot. Wadas, a member of the NFHCA Collegiate Watch List, has now scored three goals this season.
Herbert scored herself on a brilliant counter attack to end the first half, with Baekers intercepting a Richmond pass at midfield then feeding it to Herbert who pushed the Wildcats' lead to 3-0 headed into halftime. Herbert has now scored four goals this season after scoring her first career goal in August against then-No. 25 UMass. Baekers has recorded six assists this year, second on the team.
The goals kept coming in the second half. Chloe Relford finished off a Regan Cornelius feed from point-blank range in the 38th minute for her second goal of the year, while Baekers netted her second in the fourth. Cornelius' assist was the first of her career.
Ana Medina Garcia earned assists on both of Baekers goals, her first and second of the year.
Goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz secured her fourth shutout of the year while making four saves on 10 shots faced. She now has recored 10 shutouts as a Wildcat, becoming the seventh player in Northwestern history to reach double-digit shutouts.
Northwestern stays home next weekend for a pair of Big Ten clashes against No. 6 Penn State and No. 3 Maryland. Tickets at Lakeside Field for both games, and all home field hockey games this season, are free for fans of all ages.
