EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern volleyball opens its 2022 season Friday, as it hosts the Wildcats Classic at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats will play a doubleheader on Friday, August 26 against Pacific at 10 a.m. CT and UTEP at 7:30 p.m. CT, then will finish the weekend against Northeastern at 2:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. All three matches will be broadcast on B1G+.
This will be Northwestern's 11th all-time meeting against Pacific, although the two teams have not met since 2001. The Tigers hold a 9-1 series advantage, with the Wildcats' lone win coming in 1981. Pacific went 13-16 last season and finished fourth in the West Coast Conference standings with a 10-8 conference record. The Tigers competed in the Postseason NIVC, falling to Portland State.
Meanwhile, UTEP is not a team that Northwestern has much history with. The 'Cats have only played the Miners once, a three-set loss last season in El Paso. Temi Thomas-Ailara led NU with 10 kills, while Alexa Rousseau paced both teams with 18 assists and Megan Miller added 14 digs. UTEP is coming off of a strong 2021 season in which they went 24-8, advancing to the semifinals of the NVIC Tournament before falling to the eventual champions, UNLV.
Saturday will be the first matchup ever between the Wildcats and Northeastern. The Huskies completed the 2021 season with a 12-15 record, finishing seventh (8-8) in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Northwestern enters the seventh year with Shane Davis as head coach in 2022. Davis has accumulated a record of 70-99 in six seasons, and now looks to lead a team that returns all of its significant pieces. The 'Cats bring back all of their starters from 2021, with Miller, Abryanna Cannon, Tatyana Hardwick, Ella Grbac and Hanna Lesiak all opting to come back to Evanston for a fifth year. Thomas-Ailara, a first team All-Big Ten nominee, also returns for her senior season after leading Northwestern in points, kills and service aces in 2021.
The Wildcats head to the Golden Eagle Invitation hosted by Tennessee Tech next weekend, on Sept. 2 and 3, for three matches against the host Golden Eagles, Evansville and Western Carolina.
