Northwestern Keeps Season Alive in Minnesota

5/21/2022 8:00:00 AM | Baseball

Evanston, IL - Needing a win against Minnesota to keep their Big Ten Tournament hopes alive on Saturday, Northwestern erupted for eight runs in the fourth inning as the Wildcats defeated the Golden Gophers 11-9.

Michael Farinelli came within one out of his second-straight complete game, as the graduate student struck out five Gophers on a crisp Saturday night in Minneapolis. Farinelli remains third in the Big Ten in innings pitched throughout the 2022 season (87.1).

Anthony Calarco got the Wildcats started with a two-home run in the first inning, ensuring Northwestern would play from in front in a game they couldn't afford to lose. Calarco leads the Wildcats in home runs and RBIs with one game left in the regular season.

With momentum in the visiting dugout, the Wildcats erupted in the fourth inning with a eight-run frame to take control of the game.

An RBI double from Andrew Pinkston got things started, before Bennett Markinson scored on a passed ball and Tony Livermore cranked a two-run RBI double to left field. Four more runs would cross the plate on a Jay Beshears based-loaded walk, Ethan O'Donnell RBI groundout, Ruben Fontes RBI single and a Pinkston walk with the bases loaded.

After Minnesota rallied to pull within two runs in the game's final frame, Parker Hanks grabbed a one-out save to secure a must-win game for Northwestern.

The Wildcats will concluded the regular season at 2:30pm this Saturday. Northwestern needs to beat Minnesota and get some help across the conference to secure their first trip to the Big Ten Tournament since 2017.
