Wildcats Erupt in Run-Rule Victory at Ohio State

4/8/2022 7:34:00 PM | Softball

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Northwestern opened its weekend series at Ohio State in style with a 12-3 run-rule victory over the Buckeyes on Friday night.

Rachel Lewis hit two home runs in the game, bringing her total to 14 on the season and 56 in her career, moving her past Adrienne Monka and Garland Cooper for sole possession of second place in program history and just one homer away from tying Tammy Williams for as the program's all-time home run leader. Lewis finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Hitting one spot behind Lewis, Rudd picked off right where she left off last weekend going back-to-back with Lewis in the first inning to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

Ohio State evened the scored at 2-2 with a two-run homer in the second inning, but Northwestern responded with a four-spot in the following inning to take the lead which it would never relinquish. Four-straight Wildcats reached base via walks to lead off the third inning, while Nikki Cuhran and Angela Zedak each recorded an RBI to put a stamp on the rally.

In the fourth inning, Skyler Shellmyer made history by launching her first-career home run on a solo blast to right field. Shellmyer finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and three runs scored.

Angela Zedak kept the home run party going in the fifth inning with a two-run opposite field blast to score her and Nikki Cuchran. It marked Zedak's fifth home run on the year and her second of the week, as she finished the game tying her career high with four RBI.

In the circle, Danielle Williams and Lauren Dvorak each chipped in 3.0 innings of work, with Williams picking up the win to improve to 15-2 on the year.

Northwestern improves to 25-6 on the year, marking the fastest the Wildcats have reached 25 wins in the program's history. The Wildcats and Buckeyes will be back in action on Saturday for game two, with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm CT.
