Northwestern Grabs Another Walk-Off Win

Evanston, IL – It took until the 10th inning, but the 'Cats picked up another clutch win this weekend as Stephen Hrustich blasted a walk-off three-run home run to left field to defeat Penn State 5-2. With the series win, the Wildcats are now 14-13 (4-2) on the season and fourth in the Big Ten.
Hrustich not only contributed to the win with his bat, but he also made a key play in left field late in the game after pinch hitting in the fourth inning. The Nittany Lions had men on first and second with two outs in the ninth inning. CJ Pittaro singled to left, Hrustich fielded the grounder and threw the ball on a rope to home beating the runner by a few steps so catcher JC Santini could put the tag on.
The Wildcats were not done yet with spectacular defensive plays late in the game. Leading off the tenth inning, Penn State's Billy Gerlott had a hard hit up the middle, but a diving Tony Livermore snagged the ball, popped up, and fired a strike to first to get the batter. After a walk and a double with one out, Andrew Pinkston caught a fly ball in right field and came up firing to throw the runner on third out at home, keeping the score tied once again.
More strong pitching from the Wildcats kept them in the game all day. Starter Grant Comstock had one of his best games of the year, finishing his five innings of work by retiring 13 of the last 14 batters he faced. A combination of relievers Jack Sauser, Parker Hanks, Reed Smith, and Jay Beshears held Penn State hitters at bay, closing out the game with five scoreless innings. The Nittany Lions did not score after the first inning.
Beshears did his part at the mound and at the plate, collecting two hits on the day including a double. Alex Calarco also had two hits with an RBI single in the fourth inning.
Wildcat fans saw two walk-off wins this weekend, coming on back-to-back days. After one more game this week at home against Roosevelt at 3 P.M. on Tuesday, the 'Cats will hit the road for a weekend series in Champaign against Illinois.
