Boyd Tosses One-Hit Shutout to Kick Off Weekend

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Northwestern opened its weekend with an 8-0 run-rule victory over Northern Kentucky behind a gem in the circle from sophomore Lauren Boyd.
Boyd allowed just one hit in 6.0 scoreless innings while striking out eight en route to her first win and shutout of the season. Boyd carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, ultimately having it broken up on a two-out single by the Norse.
Offensively, Jordyn Rudd led the Wildcats with four RBI on the game. Rudd started the scoring in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to score Rachel Lewis. After several innings of scoreless ball, Rudd came through in the fifth inning with the bases loaded, driving in three with a double to left-center to break the game open. The senior catcher now leads the team with 16 RBI through 15 games.
Following Rudd's double, Northwestern tacked on an additional pair of runs off an error to put up a five spot in the fifth inning. With two outs in the sixth inning, Maeve Nelson put the finishing touches on the game with a double to left-center to score Lewis and Rudd.
Northwestern is back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader from Carbondale. The Wildcats will face off against Murray State at 10 am CT, followed by a meeting with the hosts Southern Illinois right after game one at 12:15 pm CT.
