Wildcats Strike Back at Penn State on the Road

2/6/2022 3:04:00 PM | Women's Basketball

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Northwestern took down the Nittany Lions 78-72, in a huge comeback win on the road.

The Wildcats executed their best performance from deep all season, shooting 48% from beyond the arc. Lauryn Satterwhite and Laya Hartman led the charge, draining three triples apiece. Meanwhile the Nittany Lions only managed four threes on 25% shooting.

Once again Veronica Burton stuffed the stats sheet, putting up 22 points, eight assists and four steals. Four other 'Cats also turned in double digit points: Jillian Brown with 14, Hartman with 13, Satterwhite with 12 and Melannie Daley with 10.

Penn State had a hot hand to start the first quarter and Northwestern struggled to keep up. Daley and Burton put the Wildcat offense on their shoulders but the 'Cats still ended the quarter behind, 28-18.

Brown kick-started Northwestern's recovery in the second quarter, hitting an open three. Burton and Caileigh Walsh followed suit with a few more buckets from beyond the arc, putting the Wildcats within five. Daley hit the last bucket of the half from the free throw line, cutting the Penn State lead to 39-37.

Once again, Brown fired up the Wildcat offense to open up the second half, hitting another three to take the lead. Laya Hartman drained two more deep buckets, creating an 11-2 Northwestern run out of thin air and forcing a Penn State time out. Coming out of the short break the Nittany Lions found a quick response, ending the quarter on top 62-55.

It was all Wildcat in the fourth quarter as Lauryn Satterwhite hit two threes and Hartman added another to retake the lead late in the fourth. Brown and Burton extended the lead to five with just two minutes left to go. Penn State had no time left to catch up and the 'Cats took home the dub.

Northwestern will remain on the road to face off against Minnesota on Friday at 3:30 p.m. CT before returning home to take on Michigan on Sunday at noon.
