'Cats Fall Short at Minnesota, 74-68

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Northwestern fell 74-68 at Minnesota on Friday afternoon at Williams Arena as the Gophers withstood several mounted comebacks and a Herculean effort from Veronica Burton,

The 'Cats fell to 13-9 and 5-6 in the Big Ten.

Despite the loss, Burton put together another two-way gem, finishing with 27 points on 9-17 shooting and 4-8 from deep, to go with seven assists, four rebounds, four blocks, four steals and no turnovers. No player has ever matched that stat line in the Her Hoops Stats database dating back to the 2009-10 season. Only five other players in that time span have recorded a game with 25 points, five assists, four blocks and four steals

While she nearly accomplished a fantastical quintuple nickel, only 23 other players this season have recorded four steals and four blocks in a game. Only one other player cleared those thresholds and scored 20 or more points, and no player cleared those thresholds and recorded more than five assists.

Senior forward Courtney Shaw continued her strong stretch of form with 11 points and nine rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass. She was one board away from her sixth straight game with double-digit rebounds.

First year Jillian Brown added 12 points and three rebounds.

The 'Cats scored 21 points off of turnovers and owned a 30-18 advantage in points in the paint, but the Gophers' hot three point shooting (53%, 10-19) was too much to overcome.

The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday in their penultimate home game of the season. They will host Michigan for a 12 p.m. CT tip-off as the 'Cats celebrate their Play4Kay Game and Alumni Day in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
