EVANSTON, Ill. — Following its thrilling 79-78 overtime victory over Rutgers, the Northwestern men's basketball team will hit the road at noon on Saturday, Feb. 5, for the first of two matchups this season against Nebraska. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network with Kevin Kugler (play-by-play) and Rapheal Davis (analyst) on the call, and broadcast on AM 720 WGN Radio with Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst).
Boo Buie led the team with 18 points, including scoring six of the team's nine points in overtime, as the Wildcats (10-10, 3-8 B1G) won their first overtime game since 2020 on Tuesday night against the Scarlett Knights. Chase Audige (15), Robbie Beran (11) and Pete Nance (10) joined Buie in double figures, marking the sixth time four players scored 10+ points in a game this year. Head coach Chris Collins recorded his seventh career win against Rutgers and improved to 10-10 in overtime games.
Audige swiped three steals against Rutgers, bringing his average in conference-only contests to 1.83 per game, to rank third in the league. Averaging 6.5 steals per game as a team, Northwestern ranks fourth in the Big Ten, and places sixth nationally posting a 6.6% steal percentage.
Nance leads the team averaging 15.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting 50.2% from the field and a team-high 43.3% from three. He is the only high-major player averaging over 15.0 points and 1.0+ blocks per game while shooting 40% from three. Nance is 11th in the conference in scoring and fifth in blocked shots.
The all-time series between Northwestern and Nebraska is deadlocked at 9-9 entering the 19th meeting on Saturday. NU is on a three-game winning streak against the Cornhuskers and claimed victories in seven of the last nine tilts. Last season, Ryan Young scored on a putback with two seconds remaining in regulation, lifting the Wildcats to a 79-78 win inside Welsh-Ryan Arena on the regular season's final day. Since taking over the program in 2013-14, Collins is 7-2 against Nebraska. Each of the last three games have been decided by five or fewer points.
The Cornhuskers (6-16, 0-11 B1G) fell at Michigan 85-79 on Tuesday night. Freshman Bryce McGowens posted a team-high 24 points, becoming the first freshman in program history to score at least 20 points in four consecutive games.
Northwestern returns home to Welsh-Ryan Arena for an 8 p.m. showdown against Indiana on Tuesday, Feb. 8.
