STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Northwestern couldn't pull out a road win against Penn State on Friday, falling to the Nittany Lions, 67-60. Senior forward Pete Nance led the Wildcats with 12 points and junior guard Boo Buie added seven assists.
Northwestern's lockdown defense took center stage in the opening half — the Cats surrendered just 22 points in the frame. The Wildcats held Penn State to 27% shooting from the field and seven turnovers, but the unit shined the brightest in a stretch of nearly six minutes that saw Northwestern hold their hosts scoreless and take control of the game.
On the offensive end, Nance led the Wildcats with seven points in the first half, while sophomore guard Ty Berry and junior guard Chase Audige tallied six apiece and Boo Buie registered four assists.
The Wildcats withstood a Nittany Lion surge after halftime and stayed within striking range. With just over eight minutes remaining in regulation, Northwestern retook the lead on a deep three from first-year guard Julian Roper, then tacked on a long bucket from Nance a couple possessions later.
The Cats continued to battle in the game's final minutes and used a 7-1 run to pull within four points, but couldn't quite complete the rally. Nance, Berry and Audige finished as Northwestern's double-digit scorers, while Buie notched a game-high with seven assists.
Northwestern's road swing will continue with a matchup against Iowa in Iowa City at 7 p.m. CT on February 28.
