WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — No. 25 Northwestern men's swimming and diving travels one state east this week to compete in the Big Ten Championships at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. Competition begins at 4 p.m. CT on Wednesday and continues through Saturday night.
The Wildcats closed out the regular season on a high last month, picking up two team wins in the tri-dual meet with Minnesota and Purdue. Northwestern picked up six gold medals, including two 1-2-3 sweeps in the 100 back and the 200 IM.
Three different Wildcats picked up two gold medals against Minnesota and Purdue: Connor LaMastra won the 1,000 free and 200 fly, Tyler Lu won the 200 and 400 IM, and Manu Bacarizo won the 100 and 200 back. Olympic bronze medalist Federico Burdisso also got on the board with a silver in the 100 fly.
Northwestern brings a historic lineup to the Big Ten Tournament this week that has set four new school records already this season, three of which came in the pool hosting the Big Ten Championships.
LaMastra finished in 1:41.70 in the 200 fly at the Purdue Invitational, breaking the previous school by 0.22 seconds set by Burdisso in 2020. He'll look to repeat the feat racing in the same pool this week. The 200 fly competes on Saturday.
Junior Kevin Houseman also set a new record in West Lafayette, touching in an NCAA 'A' cut time of 51.33 in the 100 breast, passing the previous record set by Olympian Mike Alexandrov in 2007. The 100 breast competes on Friday.
The 200 medley relay team of Bacarizo, Houseman, Burdisso and Andrew Zhang secured Northwestern's best ever time in that event, finishing in 1:24.68 at the Purdue Invitational.
Divers Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson and Evan Labuda both passed the previous record in the 3M earlier this season. Eskrick-Parkinson's 383.03 and Labuda's 382.80 now both sit at the top of the Northwestern all-time diving charts.
The full event schedule can be found on the Big Ten's Website and live coverage can be found on B1G+.
