Clearwater, Fla. – Northwestern concluded its weekend at the SPC Elite Invitational in Clearwater, Florida with a narrow 4-3 setback to No. 7 Oklahoma State on Sunday morning.
The Wildcats jumped on All-American pitcher Miranda Elish early, scoring three runs in the first inning courtesy of RBI-singles from Angela Zedak and Nikki Cuchran. Cuchran led the Northwestern offense on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In the circle, Danielle Williams struck out nine while allowing just four hits and three earned runs over 6.0 innings while being saddled with her first loss of the season. Williams finished the weekend with 31 strikeouts and a 1.54 ERA (5 ER/22.2 IP) while recording two complete games, a shutout as well as a save.
After NU jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Oklahoma State responded with an unearned run in the third inning, a run in the fourth and ultimately back-to-back solo homers in the bottom of the sixth inning, which proved to be the difference.
Northwestern now sits at 7-2 on the season following an impressive 3-1 showing at the highly competitive SPC Elite Invitational. The Wildcats added to more ranked wins to their resume over the weekend, with a 6-4 extra innings win over No. 3 UCLA on Friday followed by a 7-0 shutout over No. 15 Clemson on Saturday. The Wildcats' two losses on the season have come to No. 8 Virginia Tech and No. 7 Oklahoma State, both by one run.
Leading the Wildcats over the weekend at the plate was Skyler Shellmyer, who led the team with eight hits, five runs scored and a .471 average over the weekend. Cuchran and Maeve Nelson led the 'Cats with five RBI apiece, while Angela Zedak hit a team-best two homers over the weekend.
The Wildcats return to action next weekend for the nation's most prestigious non-conference tournament of the year: the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Desert, California. Northwestern's five-game slate includes doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, followed by a Sunday finale.
