CLEARWATER, Fla. – Northwestern softball continued its impressive stay at the SPC Elite Invitational on Saturday with an emphatic 7-0 shutout victory over No. 15 Clemson.
Danielle Williams turned in another dominant performance in the circle, allowing just three hits while striking out 11 batters while improving to 4-0 on the year. Williams logged her second shutout of the season and the 21st of her career (seventh-most in program history).
The win extends the Wildcats' winning streak to six-straight as the 'Cats improve to 7-1 on the early season. It also marks Northwestern's third win over a ranked opponent, having previously knocked off No. 23 Liberty last weekend and No. 3 UCLA on Friday behind a walk-off three-run home run from Maeve Nelson.
Fresh off her showstopping highlight from Friday, Nelson got the 'Cats on the board in the third inning with a line drive deflection off the Clemson pitcher that resulted in an infield single, scoring Lewis from second base. Nelson later came around to score via an RBI-groundout from Nikki Cuchran.
In the fifth inning, Angela Zedak extended the Wildcats' lead to 4-0 with a two-out line-drive two-run homer, her second long ball of the weekend.
Skyler Shellmyer and Rachel Lewis paced the Wildcat offense at the top of the order, each recording two-hit games with Shellmyer scoring a run and providing two RBI while Lewis scored twice and contributed an RBI of her own. Both Shellmyer and Lewis put the finishing touches on the Wildcats' win, driving in three combined runs in the top of the 6th inning.
Northwestern looks to finish strong at the SPC Elite on Sunday, when the Wildcats face off against another ranked opponent in No. 7 Oklahoma State. First pitch is slated for 8:30 am CT, with coverage on ESPN+.
