'Cats Shutout Colonels, Finish Weekend 4-1

LEESBURG, Fla. – Northwestern shut out Eastern Kentucky, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon to wrap up its opening weekend at the inaugural Northern Lights Invitational.
Lauren Dvorak turned in another solid outing in the circle, allowing just one hit and no runs in the first 3.0 innings of the game en route to her second-straight win. Dvorak, who entered the weekend having pitched just 2.2 career innings, turned in 13.2 solid innings in three appearances over the weekend, striking out seven while allowing just four runs.
Danielle Williams took over in relief for Dvorak and was masterful in 4.0 innings to pick up her first save of the season. Williams allowed just two hits while striking out five, bringing her totals on the weekend to 26 strikeouts and a 0.86 ERA (2 ER/16.1 IP).
Jordyn Rudd got the scoring started in the first inning, driving in Rachel Lewis and Skyler Shellmyer with a double down the third-base line. Rudd finished the weekend 5-for-13 with a team-leading nine RBI to go along with four extra-base hits (three doubles and a triple).
In the third inning, Maeve Nelson extended the Wildcats' lead with a solo home run to right-center. It marked Nelson's 24th homer of her career, the second-most of any active Wildcat behind Rachel Lewis (43). In the fifth inning, Nikki Cuchran added to the scoring with an RBI-single to score Sammy Stanley. Cuchran finished the weekend going 4-for-13 and four RBI>
Rachel Lewis finished the game going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. The fifth-year phenom posted astronomical numbers in the Wildcats' five games in Leesburg, reaching base in 12-of-19 plate appearances (six hits, five walks) for a team-high .632 on-base percentage to go along with five RBI, four stolen bases, six runs scored and a grand slam in Friday's season opener.
Northwestern returns to action next weekend when it travels to the high-profile SPC Elite Invitational, hosted by ESPN in Clearwater, Florida. The Wildcats will open its slate in Clearwater with a Friday doubleheader vs. Texas Tech and UCLA.
