COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 4 Northwestern's late surge in the Big Ten Tournament championship game fell short, closing the magical run with a 2-1 final score against No. 6 Michigan.
Down 2-0 in the fourth, Lauren Wadas provided a late spark for the Wildcats, finishing an acrobatic penalty corner with five minutes left on the clock to cut the Wolverine lead in half. It marked Wadas' second goal of the tournament and her sixth goal of the season. She scored the stunning golden goal with 37 seconds left in double overtime to lift Northwestern 1-0 past Michigan earlier this season.
Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Kayla Blas earned the assist on the play, her second of the postseason and 14th of the season. Her 14 assists are the most in a season by a Wildcat since Kirsten Mansfield's 17 in 2019.
Goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz put together a heroic performance, making eight saves, including five in the first half to hold the score to 1-0 at the break. Skubisz has moved herself into sole possession of seventh place in Northwestern history in career saves this tournament with 18 over the three games in Columbus.
Wadas and Alia Marshall earned spots on the conference All-Tournament Team. Wadas' two goals were tied for Northwestern's tournament lead with Peyton Halsey, while Marshall added the critical game-winning goal in the semifinals against Maryland.
The Wildcats now look to the NCAA Tournament which begins next Friday. They will learn their matchup in the NCAA Selection Show Sunday night at 9 p.m. CT.
