EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 3 and two-seed Northwestern defeated No. 25 Miami (OH) 2-1 after a shootout in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the national quarterfinals for the third straight season. It marked Northwestern's Big Ten-leading sixth win in overtime or later, moving the Wildcats to 6-1 in games finishing after regulation this year.
The sides battled to a 0-0 deadlock at halftime, even on shots and Miami leading 2-1 on penalty corners with four saves from Annabel Skubisz and a critical defensive save from Lauren Wadas. Northwestern turned on the jets in the third, out shooting the RedHawks 11-0 in the frame while securing the lead on Peyton Halsey's penalty stroke goal.
Ana Medina Garcia drew the stroke on a shot on goal deflected illegally by a Miami defender. Halsey drilled the shot into the bottom right corner to grab the 1-0 lead in the 37th minute. The senior captain, who scored two penalty strokes in the Big Ten Tournament, including the overtime golden goal against then-No. 18 Rutgers, has now scored three from the spot this postseason. She is now 5-of-6 on penalty strokes in 2022.
The RedHawks answered on a 51st-minute penalty corner to force overtime, Northwestern's seventh game in extra time this year, the most in a season in program history.
Northwestern won the advantage 6-0 on penalty corners and 4-1 on shots in the two overtime periods, but neither team managed to find the back of the net. It sent Northwestern to its first penalty shootout since last year's Big Ten Tournament.
Ana Medina Garcia and Aerin Krys sank Northwestern's first two attempts, while Skubisz forced failures on each of the RedHawks first two to hand Northwestern a 2-0 lead in the shootout. Miami battled back to tie 2-2 before Lauren Wadas flashed brilliant finesse to get around the Miami goalkeeper.
The RedHawks appeared to have scored their fifth shot to make it 3-3, but Skubisz astutely called for a referral that overturned the make, securing the 3-2 win in the shootout.
The win sends Northwestern onto the quarterfinals where it will face the winner of Iowa-Virginia Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at Lakeside Field. The game will be streamed on Big Ten Plus with no paywall.
