Northwestern Downs Huskies 63-46 Behind Lockdown Defense

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern improved to 2-0 by defeating Northern Illinois 63-46 on Friday night inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats (2-0) limited the Huskies (0-2) to a 33.3% (17-for-51) mark from the field and forced 16 turnovers.
Ty Berry registered his first career double-double by scoring 11 points and grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds. For the second time this year, Robbie Beran scored a team-high 15 points, with eight coming in the game's first six minutes. Boo Buie recorded his 300th career assist and dished out seven total while adding 13 points and six rebounds.
Northwestern held a 41-35 advantage on the glass, with 12 offensive reboundss. Matthew Nicholson added eight points and seven boards.
How It Happened
After playing to an 8-8 tie, Northwestern went on a 6-0 run with 15:16 left in the first half and would never relinquish the lead, culminating in a three from Beran, to take a 14-8 lead. The Wildcats then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 36-27 advantage. Northwestern capitalized on 11 Northern Illinois turnovers in the period, turning them into 13 points on the other end of the floor.
Northwestern kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Buie's layup, to grow the lead to 58-43 with 6:08 to go in the contest. Northwestern extended its lead to a game-high 17 points with 2:52 left in the game, and led for a total of 36 minutes.
