
'Cats Secure Opening Weekend Sweep with Another Ranked Win

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 4 Northwestern picked up its second ranked win of the season in convincing fashion once again, with an emphatic 6-2 victory over No. 21 Miami (OH) on Sunday at Lakeside Field.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the second period, the 'Cats rallied with six goals by five different players over the final 40 minutes.
Bente Baekers led the Wildcats' dominant offensive attack, scoring two goals to go along with a pair of assists. Baekers eight points through the opening weekend are tied for the most among all Big Ten players.
Down 1-0 early in the second quarter, Chloe Relford quickly responed with her first-career goal off a rebound to even the score, 1-1. Just over two minutes before halftime, Ana Medina Garcia netted her first goal of the season to give the 'Cats a 2-1 lead heading to the break.
Baekers extended the Wildcat lead to 4-1 early in the third quarter with two goals in the span of 79 seconds. It marks the 15th multi-goal game of her career.
The Redhawks got one goal back off a penalty corner, but first-year Regan Cornelius responded 21 seconds later with her first-career goal off an assist from Baekers. Captain Liese Wareham capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter with her first-career goal off another dish from Baekers.
Northwestern has now won 10-consecutive games when playing at the friendly confines of Lakeside Field, dating back to October, 2019. The Wildcats are back in action in Durham, North Carolina next weekend, when they face off against Duke and Boston College on Friday and Sunday.
