EVANSTON, Ill. – Behind a vintage performance from three graduating pitchers, Northwestern earned a 5-4 win over Iowa on Senior Day at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park on Saturday.
The Wildcats honored ten graduating seniors before their second-to-last game in Evanston on Saturday. Sam Lawrence (graduate student), David Dunn, Hank Christie (graduate student), Leo Kaplan (graduate student), Quinn Lavelle, Ryan Bader, Charlie Bourbon, Anthony Alepra, Jack Pagliarini, and team manager Declan Floyd were a part of 61 wins in their four-year tenure in Evanston, while the graduate students helped earn 88 wins and a trip to the Big Ten title game in 2017.
Graduate student Hank Christie was stellar in his final start at Miller Park. Christie tossed five innings, allowing three hits, no earned runs and recording five strikeouts in his first start of the season. Quinn Lavelle and Sam Lawrence relieved Christie, combining to allow two runs over four innings to earn the victory.
Senior David Dunn cleared the bases with a double down the left field line in the first inning to give the 'Cats an early 3-0 lead.
Iowa tied the game at three in the seventh inning, but the 'Cats responded quickly with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Stephen Hrustich and Michael Trautwein both roped RBI-singles to put Northwestern back in the lead and eventually secure the win.
The 'Cats look to secure the series-win Sunday at noon.
