Goosenberg's Third Walk-Off Homer Gives 'Cats Series Win

5/24/2021 5:37:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. –  In the final game of the season at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park, Shawn Goosenberg crushed his third walk-off home run of the year to give Northwestern an 8-6 win and series win over Iowa.

Goosenberg and junior Michael Trautwein carried the Northwestern offense, blasting two home runs and three hits each, while driving in seven of the 'Cats eight runs. Goosenberg (13) and Trautwein (11) now lead the team in home runs and rank second and fifth in the conference, despite having seven games cancelled.

Trautwein reached base four times with two home runs, a double and a walk, raising his on-base percentage to .347 in the process.

With Quinn Lavelle pitching on Senior Day on Saturday, Northwestern implemented a bullpen day on Sunday, using seven relievers to cover all nine innings of the win.  The bullpen was extremely impressive, despite hiccups in the fourth and sixth innings.

Anthony Alepra, Reed Smith, Ben Grable, Jack Pagliarini and Kellen Pate combined for 5.2 shutout innings, giving the potent Northwestern offense a chance to win the game. It was the final game for seniors Alepra and Pagliarini at Miller Park after four successful seasons in Evanston.

The Wildcats got out to an early lead, with Goosenberg and Trautwein launching homers in the first inning. In his last home game, graduate student Leo Kaplan blasted a home run in the top of the second to give the 'Cats a 4-0 lead.

Iowa cut the lead to one in the fifth, but Trautwein homered again to extend NU's lead to 6-3. The Hawkeyes responded quickly to tie the game in the seventh inning.

With a runner on and one out in the ninth inning, Goosenberg deposited a ball over the left-field fence to give Northwestern the win.

Chicago's Big Ten Team wraps up its regular season in Columbus next weekend with a three-game series against Ohio State.
