EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern secured a berth in the 2021 NCAA Softball Tournament on Sunday night, earning one of the 32 at-large bids for the program's 19th overall tournament appearance.
The Wildcats will head to Lexington, Kentucky to face off against #14-seed Kentucky, along with Miami (OH) and Notre Dame in the Lexington Region
The Wildcats concluded their 2021 regular season campaign on Sunday with a 6-5 victory over Nebraska to finish the season 29-15 and in third place in the Big Ten. This season marks the 'Cats' ninth Top-5 finish in the Big Ten since 2010, the second-most in the conference behind only Michigan. NU was one of three Big Ten teams this season to secure a berth in the NCAA Tournament, joining Michigan and Minnesota.
Led by head coach Kate Drohan and associate head coach Caryl Drohan, this marks the Wildcats' sixth NCAA Regional appearance over the last seven tournaments. Earlier this season, the Drohans also became the program's all-time wins leaders in their 20th year in Evanston. This marks the 14th overall tournament appearance in the 20-year Drohan era.
NU has advanced to the NCAA Regional final eight times under the Drohans, winning its region five times and making two trips to the Women's College World Series. Most recently in 2019, the Wildcats secured a Top-16 seed and advanced to their first NCAA Super Regional in 11 years after winning the Evanston Regional.
