EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern kicked off its final regular season series with a resounding 6-1 win over Nebraska Friday. The win brings the 'Cats to 27-14 on the season, good for third place in the Big Ten as they attempt to chase down Minnesota for second place.
Junior pitcher Danielle Williams shined again from the circle, striking out a season-high 13 batters en route to her 11th complete game of the season. The Pleasanton, California native has now fanned 44 batters over her last five appearances, notching double-digit strikeouts in three. Williams allowed just one run on four hits as she picked up her 16th win to move to 16-5 in 2021.
The Northwestern batters exploded in the bottom of the second, plating five runs to give Williams a comfortable lead early. Morgan Newport got the offense rolling with her team-leading ninth home run of the year, a solo shot to right field, to put the 'Cats in front 1-0. Three batters later, Angela Zedak smashed a home run of her own, a line drive laser over the center field wall, which also brought home Maeve Nelson for two runs. RBI singles from Skyler Shellmyer and Rachel Lewis capped the Wildcats' monster inning.
Senior Mac Dunlap, typically Northwestern's designated player, made the most of her appearance in the lineup, recording her second and third hits of the season, including a solo home run in the fourth inning. It marked the fourth home run of her career in Evanston.
Williams took care of the rest, shutting down the Huskers as she locked up the commanding win for Northwestern.
The Wildcats and Cornhuskers square off in a doubleheader at Sharon J. Drysdale Field tomorrow, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. CT in game one and 4 p.m. CT in game two. The first game will be televised on BTN+ and the second will be shown on the Big Ten Network.
