COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Northwestern dropped game to Maryland 8-4 on Saturday on the road before falling late to No. 25 Michigan in a 5-2 result in the second game of a doubleheader.
The Wildcats fell to 9-8 on the season.
In game one, the Wildcats continued their affair with the long ball with three home runs coming from Michael Trautwein, Leo Kaplan and Vincent Bianchina. Trautwein sent a two-run shot to right center in the first inning for his sixth home run in seven games. Kaplan hit his first home run since April 23, 2019 against UIC while Bianchina hit his third home run of his rookie season.
Northwestern led 4-3 after five and a half innings, thanks to its three home runs and a fine start from Jack Dyke who threw the first four innings. The Terps rallied in the sixth to lead 6-4 and tacked on two more in the eighth, which proved to be too much for the 'Cats to come back from.
Game two of the day was a tense defensive affair which was locked at 2-2 heading into the seventh inning and scoreless into the fifth inning. Tyler Uberstine delivered a solid start and thre 5.0 innings of one-run ball while striking out four. The only run Uberstine allowed was on a wild pitch in the fifth inning which gave the Wolverins a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats responded with their most reliable source of offense this season in the sixth. Both Ethan O'Donnell and Anthony Calarco homered in the frame to give Northwestern a 2-1 lead. It was Calarco's sixth home run of the season and O'Donnell's third.
After a double in the sixth tied the game for Michigan, a three-run home run in the seventh changed the tides for the Wolverines for good, and the 'Cats could not mount a comeback.
Northwestern looks to close out the weekend with a split against No. 25 Michigan on Sunday.
