COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Northwestern rebounded against No. 25 Michigan with a 4-1 win in College Park behind an excellent day on the mound from the Wildcat pitching staff.
The 'Cats improved to 10-8 and earned their first ranked win of the season.
Quinn Lavelle turned in, all things considered, one of the best starts of his career, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing just one run on four hits and three walks while striking out two. Lavelle improved to 4-0 on the season and has turned in back-to-back qaulity starts after his six-inning, three-run outing last weekend against Illinois.
First year arms Ben Grable and Reed Smith delivered massive scoreless innings apiece out of the bullpen while Sam Lawrence worked his way through a tricky ninth inning with no runs for his third save of the season.
Four runs proved to be enough from the Wildcats on offense, but their 10 hits was the most all weekend as the bats livened up. Stephen Hrustich led the way with two RBI coming on a solo home run in the first inning and a double in the seventh. Hrustich improved his season tally to 18 runs batted in.
Michael Trautwein also knocked in his team-best 21st RBI of the season on a single in the third inning to make it 2-0 for Northwestern.
In a 2-1 game in the fourth, Tony Livermore came through with a crucial sacrifice fly to score Vincent Bianchina for an insurance run, before Hrustich made it 4-1 in the seventh.
Northwestern will use the ranked win as momentum heading into its first home series at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park since May 16-18 of 2019. The 'Cats host Rutgers for a three-game set starting Friday at 3 p.m. and will look to climb back up the Big Ten standings.
