'Cats Drop Sunday Doubleheader

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Northwestern baseball came up short in a doubleheader on Sunday, losing a tight matchup to Maryland in the early afternoon before falling to Iowa in the evening.
The Wildcat bats were hot in the first game, outhitting the Terrapins 12-9 behind three-hit performances from Shawn Goosenberg and Leo Kaplan. Kaplan extended his hitting streak to a career-high eight games and his three hits tied a career-high. Goosenberg finished the day with five hits and two runs.
The 'Cats got on the board first against Maryland on an error, bringing Goosenberg home. Northwestern scored again in the second inning. After Ethan O'Donnell led off the inning with a walk, he stole second and scored on a RBI single from Kaplan.
The 'Cats struck again in the fourth when O'Donnell led off the inning with a homer to left field. Kaplan singled the next at-bat, and two batters later, Goosenberg brought him in with a double. The following inning, Northwestern got singles from Michael Trautwein and David Dunn to start the inning. They both came around to score on a two-RBI single from O'Donnell. The 'Cats tacked on another run in the top of the ninth inning on a RBI single from Vincent Bianchina.
Garrett Boeckle and Parker Hanks both recorded shutout innings out of the bullpen.
The 'Cats struck first in the second game as well. Anthony Calarco led off the game with a walk. After advancing to third on a Goosenberg single and Hrustich groundout, Calarco scored on a sacrifice fly by Trautwein. Northwestern would go on to tack on runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. O'Donnell hit his second homer of the day, while Trautwein drove in the other two runs to finish with three RBI for the game.
The 'Cats will finish off the weekend in Iowa City against Iowa tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. CT.
