Baseball Loses Barnburner due to Iowa Walk-Off

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The 'Cats fell victim to a walk-off three-run home run in a Monday afternoon barnburner. Iowa plated 7 runs in the last two innings to beat the Wildcats 12-9. 

 

The NU bats were active, mashing five home runs in the contest. Stephen Hrustich went 2-for-3 with two solo homers and two walks, his second multi-HR game of the year. 

 

Shawn Goosenberg moved to double digits in the home run category, hitting his 10th bomb of the season in the top of the seventh inning to put the 'Cats up 8-5. Goosenberg kept up his hot bat, going 3-for-5 moving his season average to .368.

 

David Dunn and Ethan O'Donnell both knocked balls out of the yard for their only hits of the game. 

 

The Wildcats took an early 3-0 lead after the top of the second after the Hrustich, Dunn, and O'Donnell bombs. Iowa brought it back to 3-3 after five with Northwestern reclaiming a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth. 

 

NU went back and forth with Hawkeyes, leading 9-8 going into the bottom of the ninth. Unfortunately for the 'Cats, the Hawkeye bats could not be stopped with pinch-hitter Brett McCleary launching a three-run walkoff home run to right field.

 

Chicago's Big Ten Team will return home this upcoming weekend to face the Michigan Wolverines and the Illinois Fighting Illini. First pitch is on Friday, April 30 at 3 p.m. CT at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
