ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Coming off a 4-1 victory to open the weekend series, Northwestern dropped a pair of matchups to #20 Michigan on Saturday at Alumni Field.
In game one of the afternoon, Maeve Nelson put the Wildcats ahead, 2-1, with a two-out two-run bomb to left field to bring around herself and Emma Bartz. It marked the third homer of the year for Nelson, as well as just the third home run allowed all season by Wolverines pitcher Alex Storako.
Adding hits for the Wildcats in game one were Nikki Cuchran and Hannah Cady. In the circle, Lauren Boyd tossed her third complete game of the season, but ultimately took her second loss of the season as she allowed seven runs (only two of which were earned) in 6.0 innings while striking out three.
In game two, Jordyn Rudd continued her red hot weekend at the plate with an RBI-double to center field in the top of the first inning to bring around Rachel Lewis. In her next at-bat, Rudd sent a ball deep over the left-center fence for a two-run homer to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.
Michigan evened the score up in the top of the sixth inning via a two-out two-RBI double and ultimately walked the game off in the next inning with a three-run home run.
Danielle Williams recorded nine strikeouts in the circle in the second game, extending her total on the season to 126–the third-most in the conference behind Michigan pitchers Storako and Meghan Beaubien.
The Wildcats will look to earn a series split on Sunday as they close out their series in Ann Arbor. First pitch is scheduled for 11 am CT, with coverage live on Big Ten Network.
