Wildcats Ride Four-Run Eighth to Win Over Indiana

4/17/2021 3:21:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern (12-11) took down Indiana (14-8) 8-5 Saturday afternoon to pull even in the three-game weekend series.

The Wildcats' bats, notably first-year Vincent Bianchina, jumped out to an early 4-0 lead through the third inning. Bianchina launched solo home runs in back-to-back innings for his first collegiate multi-home run performance. The Lafayette, California native now has five home runs to start the year. He finished the day batting 3-of-4 with 2 RBIs.

RBI doubles from Anthony Calarco and Shawn Goosenberg in the bottom of the second also contributed to Northwestern's hot start.

Indiana managed to crawl back to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth until the 'Cats broke it open in the bottom half of the inning. Northwestern jumped on relief pitcher Braydon Tucker, with back-to-back singles from David Dunn and Bianchina. First-year Ethan O'Donnell cleared the bases with a 2-RBI single through the right side. Another single from Calarco brought O'Donnell home before a passed ball brought the 'Cats to four runs in the inning.

Indiana had no answer in the ninth as relief pitcher Sam Lawrence took down the side in order.

Lawrence earned the win for the 'Cats, allowing just one hit and notching a strikeout in 1.2 innings pitched. Tyler Uberstine went five innings in the start, striking out four on 100 pitches. Reed Smith struck out three batters of his own.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action tomorrow at Rocky and Bernice Miller Park to close out the series with Indiana. First pitch is scheduled for noon CT with live coverage on BTN+.
