'Cats Blank Hawkeyes for 2-0 Road Win

IOWA City, Iowa – Northwestern bounced back on their road trip with a 2-0 shutout at Iowa on Monday behind goals from Olivia Stone and Regan Steigleder.
The Wildcats improved to 3-2 on the young season and dropped the Hawkeyes to 0-4-1. Northwestern's three wins have all been shutouts, tied for second most in the conference.
Despite a dominant first half, it took a late surge for Northwestern to get on the board. Stone scored her second goal of the season in the 53rd minute after latching onto a cross from Josie Aulicino and sending it past thee Iowa keeper to finish off a lighting-fast counterattack. Aulicino picked up her second assist of the season and is tied with Stone for a team-high four points.
Steigleder gave the 'Cats a crucial insurance goal with a spectacular solo effort in the 65th minute. Staring down a free kick just on the edge of the Hawkeye box and slightly right of center, the Iowa City native bent it around the wall to beat the keeper at her near post. The goal was Steigleder's fifth of her career and gave the 'Cats yet another set piece tally.
Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood recorded her 12th career clean sheet and made four saves. Hallie Pearson and Danika Austin anchored the backline with 90 and 83 minutes of action, respectively, holding the hosts to just six shots total.
First year Nicole Doucette recorded a solid 51 minutes of action, the most in her rookie season after appearing for just seven minutes against Penn State. Junior Kylie Fisher nearly added a third goal on the day with an 80th minute shot that just was inches away from a highlight reel strike.
The Wildcats are back in action Saturday at Purdue for a noon kickoff. The match willl be televised on Big Ten Network.
