EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern took down the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 79-78 in a nail-biting finish on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena for the Wildcats' third consecutive win.
With the 'Cats down one, Ryan Young scored the go-ahead bucket for the second consecutive game, this time after grabbing an offensive rebound and converting on a putback with two seconds left in the game to put the Wildcats on top for good.
NU had six scorers in double digits for the first time since December 20, 2016. Chase Audige led the way with 14 points, leading the 'Cats in scoring for the seventh time this season. Pete Nance and Miller Kopp contributed 13 and 12 respectively, while Boo Buie and Robbie Beran both added 11. First-year Ty Berry added 10, his second highest output against a Big Ten opponent all season, on 4-7 shooting from the field. Audige was hot from downtown again, hitting two of his three three-point shots, now shooting 75% from behind the arc in his last two games.
NU's defense was staunch to start the game, forcing turnovers in the first two possessions and holding the Cornhuskers scoreless for the first 3:07 of the game. Senior Eric Zalewski notched his first career steal after logging his first career start on Senior Day. The 'Cats matched that defensive intensity in the final minute of the second half, forcing a pivotal shot clock violation to keep the game within striking distance.
The Wildcats led by nine at the half by a score of 39-30, behind a very strong shooting first half. At one point, the Wildcats connected on eight consecutive field goals, going on a 12-0 run in that span.
In the second stanza, Buie led the 'Cats in the points column with nine, hitting two shots from behind the arc in a 17 second span, highlighting the 'Cats' 9-0 run. Audige and Nance kept the pressure on scoring eight apiece, with Audige connecting on both of his threes in the half.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will head to the Big Ten Tournament with a win on Senior Day for the second consecutive season. The Wildcats will take the court at Lucas Oil Stadium this Wednesday at 5:30 pm CT.
