Wildcats Split Saturday Doubleheader vs Ohio State

LEESBURG, Fla. – Northwestern split a Saturday doubleheader against Ohio State to improve its record to 10-1 on the early season.
After suffering their first setback of the season in a 4-2 setback, the Wildcats bounced back in the second game of the twin bill with a convincing 9-0 run-rule victory in five innings.
Danielle Williams made the start for the 'Cats in the second game and tallied her third shutout of the season, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings while striking out six. Williams has now opened the season on a 30.0 inning scoreless streak and is 6-0 on the year.
After falling behind 3-0 in game one, the Wildcats clawed their way back thanks to a two-run homer by Rachel Lewis in the top of the fourth inning, her first of the season, to cut the deficit to 3-2.
After OSU added another run to make the score 4-2, Northwestern battled back in the top of the seventh inning and put two runners on base to bring Lewis to the plate with two outs, but a hard-hit lineout ultimately ended the game.
Lauren Boyd made the start for the Wildcats in game one and allowed four runs over 5.0 innings while striking out three. Boyd also reached base twice at the plate, including notching her first-career hit with a single up the middle in the second inning.
The Wildcat bats came alive in the second game, scoring nine runs on nine hits, including three extra base hits in the form of doubles from Angela Zedak, Morgan Newport and Kendall Peterson.
After two scoreless innings, the Wildcats hung six runs in the bottom of the third frame to take a commanding lead. Newport kicked off the rally with an RBI infield single to bring around Skyler Shellmyer.
After tallying two more runs via a hit by pitch and wild pitch, Zedak extended the lead to 5-0 with a two-RBI double to right center to bring around Newport and Mac Dunlap.
The 'Cats put themselves in run-rule position in the bottom of the fourth frame thanks to a two-RBI double from Newport and a double from Peterson, marking the first extra base hit of her career.
After recording a hit in the first game, Jordyn Rudd tallied the fifth three-hit game of her career in game two.
Newport led the Wildcats with three RBI in game two, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Zedak also tallied a multi-hit effort going 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
Northwestern closes out its six-game Florida slate on Sunday with a rubber match against Ohio State. First pitch is scheduled for 8 am CT, with action live on Big Ten Network+.
