
This Week In Northwestern Athletics: March 10

Eight Northwestern programs will be in action this weekend, in addition to the Big Ten men's and women's basketball tournaments in Indianapolis.
Field Hockey
Northwestern field hockey welcomes Indiana to Lakeside Field this weekend for its home opener. The 'Cats will take on Indiana twice this weekend, with games set for Friday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
The Wildcats have gone 3-1 to open the season, matching their best record through four games since 2014. Northwestern fell 2-1 to Penn State in a shootout on Friday marking its first loss of the season.
Ana Medina Garcia kicked off the scoring against Maryland on Sunday with a goal in the 24th minute, but Maryland tied it up in the third quarter. With under seven minutes remaining and the game tied, Bente Baekers came through for the 'Cats with a fabulous solo-goal.
The Wildcats have won their past three matchups with Indiana, dating back to 2016. Both games will be live-streamed on BTN+.
Softball
The Wildcats are set for another six-game set this weekend in Leesburg, Fla. with three games scheduled against both Indiana and Ohio State. The weekend kicks off with a double-header against Indiana on Thursday.
The 'Cats are coming off a perfect 6-0 opening weekend, the best start in program history. Danielle Williams was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 and not allowing a run on the weekend, including an opening day, eight-strikeout shutout. Northwestern also saw the debut of first-year Lauren Boyd, who tossed a shutout in her collegiate debut and posted a 0.88 ERA in 16 innings on the weekend.
Center fielder Skyler Shellmyer led the team with eight hits over the weekend, hitting .667 (8-for-12). Shortstop Maeve Nelson recorded a team-high eight RBI and 11 total bases, including three doubles and a triple.
The Wildcats are undefeated against Indiana since 2012 and Ohio State since 2014. All games will be broadcast on BTN+ this weekend.
Lacrosse
On Thursday and Saturday the third-ranked Northwestern women's lacrosse team will match up against the No. 5 Penn State Nittany Lions.
The 'Cats are 3-0 to start the season with two wins over Johns Hopkins and a win over Ohio State. NU is outsourcing their opponents thus far, 58-24 with an average margin of victory of 11.33 goals per game.
Junior Izzy Scane leads the way with 20 goals on 38 shots. Senior Lauren Gilbert has 13 goals of her own to go along with three assists.
Men's Soccer
Northwestern heads to East Lansing on Thursday for a matchup with Michigan State, then returns home to host Wisconsin on Monday. Monday is scheduled to be the first game of the season held at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium.
The Wildcats moved to 2-2 on the season after falling to Ohio State in Columbus on Sunday, 4-2. Despite the loss, Ugo Achara Jr. scored his conference-leading fourth goal of the season after a beautiful move to beat a defender in the box. Achara Jr. continued his hot streak after being named TopDrawer Soccer and Coller Soccer News' player of the week last week.
Vicente Castro also scored his first goal of the season and tallied an assist against Ohio State. His three assists are tied for the conference lead with his teammate Bardia Kimiavi and Michigan's Kevin Buca.
Women's Soccer
Northwestern is back in action on Saturday as the Wildcats travel to Purdue to face off against the Boilermakers at noon CT on Big Ten Network.
In their last time out on Monday afternoon, the Wildcats notched a 2-0 shutout at Iowa to improve to 3-2 on the early season. Olivia Stone and Regan Steigleder netted the two goals for the 'Cats, while Mackenzie Wood recorded her 12th career shutout in goal. So far this season, each of Northwestern's three wins have all been shutouts, tied for second most in the conference.
Women's Tennis
The No. 8-ranked Wildcats welcome Nebraska and Iowa to the Combe Tennis Center this weekend. The 'Cats will take on Nebraska at 4 p.m. CT on Friday and Iowa at noon on Sunday.
After defeating Michigan State 4-3 on Saturday, Northwestern suffered its first conference loss this season at the hands of Michigan, snapping an eight-match winning streak. The Wildcats are now 10-2 on the season and 7-1 in conference play.
Clarissa Hand and Brianna Crowley both went 2-0 on the weekend and won both of their doubles games. Hanna McColghan also picked up a win against Michigan State.
Men's Tennis
Northwestern men's tennis heads to Champaign on Sunday, Mar. 14, to take on Illinois.
The 'Cats are coming off a 2-0 weekend which saw victories over both Nebraska, 4-0, and Iowa, 6-1. The Wildcats went 9-1 in singles matches over the two games and won both doubles points. Northwestern is now 5-3 on the season and 4-2 in conference play.
Fencing
The Wildcats travel to Columbus, Ohio for a grudge match against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday, March 13th. The 'Cats faced the Buckeyes this past weekend, splitting the duels against them.
Foil fought well against the Buckeyes, going 12-6 in their 18 bouts. Sofie Simontov went 3-1 against the Buckeyes.
The 'Cats also faced Lawrence and Notre Dame this weekend, finishing 3-3 in all their duels taking place on Saturday and Sunday. NU outmatched Lawrence, defeating them in 49 of the 54 scheduled bouts.
