Softball Starts 6-0 After Penn State Sweep

'Cats off to best start in program history after flawless weekend
LEESBURG, Fla. – Northwestern softball finished the weekend undefeated after sweeping Penn State in the third doubleheader of the weekend on Sunday. The 'Cats are now 6-0 to start a season for the first time in program history.
In the first matchup, the 'Cats had an explosive third inning. NU plated all eight of their runs in the third with two huge two RBI singles coming from Jordyn Rudd and Skyler Shellmyer. Playing center field for the Wildcats, Shellmyer was 3-for-3 with two RBI, a run, and a steal.
Danielle Williams picked up the win in the first game, tossing three strong innings. Williams struck out four of the 11 batters she faced, giving up just one hit to the Nittany Lions.
In the second contest, first-year Lauren Boyd held the Nittany Lions to just one run while picking up a complete game and the win for the Wildcats.
Nikki Cuchran and Rachel Lewis led the way with the bats. In the first, Cuchran laced a double down the left field line to drive in Morgan Newport. Rachel Lewis scored a run in the first and second frame for the 'Cats.
After the weekend of doubleheaders, Shellmyer leads the Wildcats in batting average (.667) and OPS (1.381). Danielle Williams is yet to let up a run this season while only giving up three hits and striking out 17 batters in 13 innings of work.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action on Thursday, March 11. They will play a doubleheader against the Indiana Hoosiers in Leesburg, Florida.
