EVANSTON, Ill. – With three games left in the Big Ten season, Northwestern hosts Minnesota for a critical matchup in the Big Ten standings on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Martin Stadium and will be streamed on B1G+.
The Wildcats (7-6-1, 3-3-1 B1G) sit in seventh place in the Big Ten with ten points while Minnesota (7-4-3, 3-4 B1G) is in a three-way tie for eighth place with nine points.Â
Northwestern is coming off a 1-0 defeat in overtime at Thursday against a Wisconsin team ranked in the top-30 nationally in RPI. The Wildcats frustrated the Badger attack over the course of the evening, but were done in 30 seconds into the first extra frame on a goal from Natalie Viggiano.Â
Minnesota is coming off a dominant 5-0 win at Illinois on Thursday. The Gophers average the fourth most goals per game in the Big Ten at 1.9 and allow less than a goal per game defensively. Their attack is led by Izzy Brown with six goals in 13 games.Â
The Northwestern offense is led by midfielders Josie Aulicino and Regan Steigleder. Â Aulicino has six goals and seven assists on the season while Steigleder has three goals and an assist.Â
Northwestern was defeated in the spring season by Minnesota, 2-1 in overtime on the road. The game was played indoors, with Rowan Lapi scoring the Wildcats goal on an assist from Marianna Annest.Â
The Wildcats' last win against Minnesota was a key 2-0 win over the 23rd ranked Gophers in the fall of 2017. Steigleder played 71 minutes in the contest.Â
