Evanston, Ill. – No. 7 Northwestern is slated for a Sunday matinee matchup with its West Coast rival Stanford (2-2) under the natural light in Ryan Fieldhouse this weekend. The face-off is set for noon CT on March 1.
This is the first meeting between the two programs since the 2013 season in which the Wildcats earned wins against the Cardinal in the both games they played, the second a 15-8 victory in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Northwestern has won the last nine consecutive showdowns with Stanford dating back to 2004.
Northwestern is off to a 3-2 start to the season and is coming off a hard-fought defeat to a Syracuse team that now sits as the fourth ranked program in the nation. The Wildcats led 8-7 at the half before a strong second half from Syracuse put the game away.
Junior Lauren Gilbert and senior Lindsey McKone each netted two goals apiece against Syracuse and have shined for Northwestern so far this season. Gilbert has already found the back of the net 16 times, five of which came in the win over Arizona State, while contributing five assists. McKone, who earned the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week title after week one, is up to 11 goals and 12 assists, having a hand in 23 of Northwestern's points this season.
Sophomore Madison Doucette got her first career start against Syracuse, going the distance while securing a new career high 11 saves.
Stanford is riding a two-game winning streak, coming off wins against San Diego State and UC Davis after starting with losses to Denver and Virginia.
After the showdown with the Cardinal, the Wildcats will welcome #1 North Carolina to Evanston on March 9 before traveling to Nashville, TN to open conference play against Penn State later that week.
