Evanston, Ill. - Northwestern fell to No. 7 Syracuse after a hard-fought and action-packed 60 minutes Saturday night at Ryan Fieldhouse.
Syracuse kicked off the scoring, but Northwestern quickly fought back with their first goal of the game, scored by graduate student Liza Elder. The Wildcats and Orange each added another goal before Syracuse jumped out to a 6-2 advantage.
After the Orange took a 7-3 lead, the 'Cats hit back. Northwestern scored five goals within three minutes to lead at the half. Sophomore Elle Hansen led the charge with the first goal of the streak, assisted by senior Lindsey McKone. Junior Lauren Gilbert and senior Megan Kinna added two more. McKone topped off the streak with two goals of her own, leading the team with two goals and two assists on the night.
The 'Cats led 8-7 at the half.
Syracuse scored the first goal of the second half, and the Wildcats were not able to regain their momentum from the first 30 minutes. Hansen and junior Taylor Pinzone tallied their second goals of the game, but Syracuse answered with an offensive drive that put them up 13-10. A goal from Gilbert brought the 'Cats back within two, but they could generate enough offense to pull back on top.
Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Doucette earned her first start of the season and tallied a season-high 11 saves.
The Wildcats return to Ryan Fieldhouse next weekend when they take on Stanford. The game will begin at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
