COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The Northwestern Wildcats fell in a hard-fought road contest to No. 7 Maryland, 76-67 on Tuesday night in the XFINITY Center.
The Northwestern offense was led by Ryan Young, Boo Buie, and Miller Kopp, who all scored in double-digits. This marks Buie's 10th game reaching double figures this season, while Kopp has scored 10+ points in 14 of his last 15 games.
Young carried the Wildcat's offense for much of the game, scoring a team-high 17 points. The redshirt first-year has now scored 15-or-more points in four games this season. Young's 17 points and eight field goals are both career highs in conference games, and his 72.7% (8-of-11) shooting percentage is his highest in a game (min. 5 attempts) since shooting 73.3% (11-of-15) against SIUE on December 15th.
After falling in an early 11 point deficit to open the game, the Wildcats clawed back with a nine-to-three run to cut Maryland's lead to four. The Terrapins stormed back with a 12-3 run of their own to close the half, taking a 37-25 lead into halftime. Buie led the 'Cats with nine first half points.
Northwestern came out of halftime hot, shooting 53% and outscoring Maryland 42-39 in the second stanza. The 'Cats exploded to open the half, going on a 15-6 run to cut the lead to four. Young was responsible for eight of the Wildcats' first 13 points in the run. However, the Wildcats' potent offense was not enough to surmount a comeback against the home team.
Chicago's Big Ten Team returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday to take on Minnesota. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on BTN.
