IOWA CITY, Iowa - No. 19 Northwestern fell to No. 10 Iowa, 87-72 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Tuesday night. The loss marked the Wildcats' first in conference play after starting a perfect 3-0 in the Big Ten.
Iowa scored the game's first points with a two-point jumper, but Northwestern quickly stormed out to an 8-2 lead with eight unanswered points, all from junior Pete Nance. The Wildcats held Iowa scoreless for 3:11 during that run while Nance went 3-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from deep.
Nance starred for Northwestern all night after scoring the team's first eight points. He finished with a new career-high 21 points, 17 of which came in the first half, on 9-of-15 shooting with three 3-pointers, tying a career-high. The junior forward also contributed four rebounds and a block.
The Wildcats shot with high efficiency in the first half, hitting on 50% from the field, including 5-of-12 (42%) from deep, while connecting on all seven free throw attempts. Nevertheless, Iowa managed to take a 45-36 lead into the break.
Redshirt sophomore Chase Audige came out firing in the second half, hitting on back-to-back 3-point attempts on Northwestern's first two possessions of the frame to cut Iowa's lead to three.
Audige finished the game with 14 points and a team high four 3-point field goals.
After Iowa responded to Audige's threes with two free throws, junior Miller Kopp came back with a 3-pointer of his own on the other end to pull the 'Cats within two 1:42 into the second frame. Despite the hot shooting from deep early in the second half, Northwestern couldn't pull closer than that two-point deficit as Iowa sealed the win.
Kopp finished with 11 points as one of four Wildcats scoring in double figures along with Nance, Audige and center Ryan Young who added 10 points of his own.
Northwestern will be back in action Jan. 3 to meet No. 16 Michigan on the road. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT as the Wildcats look to improve their 2-1 record against teams in the AP Top 25.
