EVANSTON, Ill. –  Northwestern will close out its non-conference slate this week with a pair of games against in-state foes SIU-Edwardsville and Quincy. The Wildcats are set to host SIUE at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday, with tip-off at 3 p.m. CT on ESPNU, followed by a Tuesday afternoon matinee vs. Quincy at 3 pm on BTN Plus.

Northwestern will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon after a narrow setback on Wednesday. The Wildcats got off to a hot start before faltering in the final seconds against Pittsburgh. The 'Cats held the Panthers to only 22 points in the first half, the lowest first half output by an NU opponent since Dec. 8, 2019 against Purdue.

Three 'Cats finished with double-digit points. Sophomore Boo Buie led the team with 14 while fellow sophomores Ryan Young and Chase Audige followed. Buie's points were fueled by success at the charity stripe, setting a new career high of eight free throws made.

Sunday marks the seventh-ever meeting between Northwestern and SIU-Edwardsville, and the Wildcats have yet to lose a contest against the Cougars. The teams first met in 1979, and in their most recent outing in 2019 the Wildcats cruised to a 72-54 victory powered by a career-high 25 points from Young.

STORYLINES

  1. Boo Buie wasn't the only Wildcat to see success at the free throw line. Northwestern made a total of 20 free throws against Pittsburgh, the most the Wildcats have made against any ACC opponent since 2010. In total, Northwestern has racked up 71 free throws through their first three games, surpassing the 2017-18 team for the most free throws made in the first three games since at least 2010-11.

  2. Chase Audige led the 'Cats with five field goals against Pittsburgh. His 12 points on Wednesday mark his third-straight game scoring in double figures. He is tied for his longest streak of 10+ point games of his career, which he had done previously during his freshman season with William and Mary.

  3. Ty Berry is averaging 10.7 points per game and leads all Big Ten first-years in three-point percentage (min. 8 attempts) at 46.2% (6-for-13). Berry hit a three-pointer in the first half of Wednesday's contest, marking his first points scored in the first half this season.

  4. While Berry is hitting it from deep for the Wildcats, their opponents have not seen similar success. Northwestern has only allowed 19 shots from deep on 73 attempts (26%), leading the Big Ten in three-point defense.

  5. Boo Buie has led Northwestern in assists through all three games so far. In the first two games he tied his career high of seven and racked up six against Pittsburgh to go along with his 14 points. Buie is second in the Big Ten in assists per game at 6.7.
