Kopp Scores 20 in Back-and-Forth Battle Against Ohio State

1/26/2020 7:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern got another big performance out of Miller Kopp Sunday evening in a loss to Ohio State at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The forward dropped 20 points in 36 minutes of action in a game where each team led for at least 10 minutes.

Kopp finished the contest with an 8-17 mark from the field, his fourth 20-point performance of the season. He also added three rebounds in what was his fifth-straight game of notching at least 15 points and ninth consecutive game in double-figures.

Pat Spencer helped keep the offense ticking with an impressive all-around performance, scoring 13 points to go along with five rebounds and a team-leading four assists. Ryan Young also gave a solid showing, chipping in with eight points, five boards and three assists of his own.

NU got off to a quick start, scoring the first seven points of the contest. A pair of tough field goals by Spencer were followed by a corner three from Kopp, making it 7-0 four minutes into the game.

The make from deep was the start of a hot half for Kopp. He hit two more jumpers, helping the 'Cats hold a 16-15 lead at the midway point of the first frame.

The Buckeyes jumped ahead as the half progressed thanks to six made threes on 46% shooting from behind the arc. The hosts kept it tight with smooth shooting of their own, as Kopp continued to lead the way on the offensive end.

The scoreboard read 38-35 at the intermission, with Ohio State holding a narrow three-point lead. Kopp's 15 points were the most of any player in the opening half, while Kaleb Wesson led OSU with 11. Spencer's performance was noteworthy as well, with a line of six points, two rebounds and three assists at the break.

After six straight buckets from the visitors, the Wildcats trailed by nine. A Pete Nance three-pointer and put-back from Young cut it back to four with 8:45 to play. Over the next five-and-a-half minutes, OSU pulled away with a 14-5 run on the back of a pair of triples, leading by 13 at the three-minute mark. Each team added just one basket apiece in the final three minutes, with the final score 71-59.

Next up for Northwestern is a trip to East Lansing to take on Michigan State this Wednesday, Jan. 29. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. CT, with the action to be broadcast live on BTN.
